About Jan & the Vision Behind MooringMate

👋 Hi, I’m Jan.

I'm a fintech entrepreneur from Switzerland, currently circumnavigating the globe with my wife and two daughters aboard our catamaran.

Over the last year, sailing through the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, I’ve come across a repeating challenge in almost every bay: finding a safe, reliable mooring buoy shouldn’t be this hard — and yet, it is.

No matter the country or region, the story is the same:

  • No clear information on mooring availability
  • No way to know if the buoy is safe for my boat
  • No booking or payment system — and often no one to even pay
  • No way to report a damaged or missing buoy
  • And almost zero digital infrastructure in place

🌍 The Bigger Picture

We all know that anchoring damages the seabed, especially in areas with seagrass meadows and coral reefs. Installing and maintaining mooring buoys is a sustainable, local solution — one that protects marine ecosystems, creates jobs, and generates fair income for coastal communities.

But without a platform to manage, book, and promote those moorings, the system remains fragmented, unreliable, and underused.

🚀 That’s Why I am creating MooringMate

With a background in building technological platforms, I decided to apply my skills and hire a team where they’re needed most: the sea.

MooringMate is built to solve one specific problem:

Help sailors and providers find, book, and manage mooring buoys — safely, sustainably, and simply.

It’s not just a platform. It’s a tool to:

  • Give sailors peace of mind
  • Offer providers a way to generate income
  • Support governments and NGOs with data and management tools
  • And ultimately, help protect the very waters we sail on

👥 Join Me in Building This

I’m starting with the sailors and providers who’ve faced the same frustrations I have. Together, we can shape a solution that works for everyone — from a solo sailor in Sardinia to a marine park in the South Pacific.

If you believe in that vision too, I’d love to have you on board. See you out there — on the water, not circling a bay looking for a buoy.
